Here is an easy breezy recipe to make your own vanilla extract. You have to let it set for a while, but believe me, it is worth it.
This is a 2 ingredient recipe.
5-7 vanilla beans
1 1/2 cups vodka
you will need a glass bottle or jar that holds 8 ounces or more
With a sharp knife, cut the vanilla so the beans are exposed. You don't have to cut the beans completely open, just make sure they are exposed. If your beans are too large, simply cut them into smaller pieces and place the beans into the bottle or jar.
Pour the vodka into the bottle or jar, use a funnel if you are having trouble pouring the vodka. Make sure the beans are completely submerged, if not add more vodka. Shake the bottle a few times.
Store the vanilla at room temperature and out of direct sunlight. Be sure to check on the vanilla at least once a week for about 3 weeks and shake the bottle or jar. The longer the vanilla sits, the stronger the flavor will be.
You can start using it as soon as 6-7 weeks, but again the longer it sits, the flavor intensifies. So a few months is ideal.
I have some that has been sitting for close to 1 year and the flavor is absolutely DIVINE! Be patient and leave a comment if you have ever made it or if you plan on trying it out.
